The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero recorded about 2.076 million installations nationwide. Developers added 27,391 systems during June, contributing 132 megawatts. The latest monthly figures remain provisional and may change as more projects enter the official dataset. The capacity total covers rooftop arrays, commercial systems and large solar farms. It also sets a baseline before new plug-in solar rules take effect.
June delivered the second-highest monthly installation count recorded in the UK. Only March 2026 ranked higher, with 28,782 installations. Solar capacity increased by 2.2 gigawatts, or 10.9%, during the 12 months through June. The country also recorded 269,000 installations during 2025, the highest annual total to date. Most systems installed that year were on homes, businesses and other buildings. Utility-scale projects also continued to raise the country’s overall solar generation capacity.
The next regulatory change arrives on August 27, when amendments covering plug-in solar systems take effect. They create an approval route for small generators that connect through a standard UK plug and socket. Eligible devices may deliver no more than 800 watts of alternating current output. They must operate alongside the electricity distribution network and comply with Interim Product Specification version 2. The framework excludes plug-in batteries and products designed to store electricity imported from a household circuit.
Plug-in rules set safety threshold
The framework modifies the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 and the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, one day after ministers made it. A notified body may approve a standard plug when it meets relevant BS 1363 requirements and the product specification. The exception addresses an existing restriction on plugs used to connect generating equipment to sockets. Product approval provisions extend across the UK, while the electricity safety amendment applies in England, Wales and Scotland.
The interim specification covers electrical design, British plug requirements, mounting systems, fire protection and product labelling. It establishes the conditions that equipment must meet before legal sale and connection. An electrical safety study tested representative plug-in solar systems on UK domestic wiring. The study found stable operation under tested conditions, with no sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. It also identified differences in product quality, including export limitation and electromagnetic compatibility. Those findings supported a UK-specific specification and clear guidance for consumers.
Retail preparations follow public consultation
The government consultation received 466 responses from businesses, technical specialists, regulators and members of the public. More than 85% supported the interim product specification, while a majority backed the proposed plug amendment. Participants included energy suppliers, electricians, manufacturers, network operators, academics and trade groups. Some respondents raised concerns about older household wiring and noncompliant products sold through online marketplaces. Others warned that consumers could confuse the rules with permission for plug-in batteries. The government plans to publish consumer guidance when the regulations commence.
Retailers including B&Q, Currys, Amazon and Lidl joined government preparations for plug-in solar before the consultation closed. The format is designed for households that cannot use conventional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. The June capacity total does not include systems operating through the new plug-in framework. Such devices cannot legally use the amended route before August 27. From that date, only approved products meeting the 800-watt limit and interim safety specification may use a standard household socket.
